Windward Lake Club // A Tennis Community, Within a Community
Live, breath, sleep and eat tennis… well only if you insist! Windward Lake Club allows visitors ample opportunities to get in the game.
With revamped ownership and a nationally-acclaimed Director of Tennis recently hired, Windward Lake Club understands that every aspect of tennis, from adult teams to junior tournaments, needs spotless execution. Windward, which includes 20 hard courts, two clay courts, two paddle courts, six 36′ courts, a pool, newly-refurbished waterslide, kitchen for the Wave Café, kid’s water zone, and community marina, can offer a wide variety of amenities, along with its prime tennis program. Located in the northern- Atlanta suburb of Alpharetta off exit 10 on GA 400, Windward’s easy access to surrounding restaurants, shops, entertainment venues and highways makes it a target among tennis-enthusiasts.
Whether you recently moved to suburbia or are visiting relatives around the corner, Windward should be included on your itinerary, simply put. As Club Manager Andy Weiberg said, “We’re priced affordable but offer high quality products with everything available right here.” Could anyone really turn down a marina within walking distance of the courts where you just played a league match? Well, let’s lay down the basics!
With a pool across from over twenty lighted tennis courts, a marina including 100 dock slips for members’ boats, and a neighborhood feel just north of Atlanta, this location may be difficult to beat. Windward offers non-member rates for drills and clinics, but the Club is a member-only facility; players must be members to compete on Windward Teams. A one-time initiation fee of $700 applies ($50 discount for Windward Residents.) The membership options include a full facility membership (tennis, platform/paddle tennis, and swim,) tennis membership (tennis and platform/paddle tennis,) swim membership (swim only with 50% off platform/paddle tennis annual dues,) platform tennis membership (no initiation fee,) or resident marina memberships (includes use of marina only.) There are family, couple and single options for each of these memberships along with senior discounts for those 55 and over.
Last summer, all the tennis courts were resurfaced, and the staffing and programming now is set in place for the upcoming seasons. With Craig Cignarelli on board from Malibu, CA, he plans to implement a new Grips program, his own Player Development regime. Noted as “karate for tennis,” Windward’s Player Development Program offers everything from red, orange and green ball play all the way to yellow ball and national-level tournament competition. Players beginning with color-balls receive new grips in the mail each time they complete a new skill level; seven total grips can be acquired as players move up in levels, and coaches can use an innovative phone app to document players and send the grips and achievement certificates directly to players’ homes. For more advanced players, Cignarelli also trains tournament level and national players on the Grips system with skills testing, but they do not receive different colored grips.
Windward offers summer camps from May to July for children as well, along with junior team tennis teams and clinics. Camps include half day or full day schedule options, with munchkin tennis (4-7 years old,) or junior tennis camp (7-14 years old.) There are discounts for multiple siblings or multiple camp sign-ups. Year-round academies can improve anyone’s game, guaranteed. Children of any age, size and style of play can benefit from the drills Windward has to offer. Playing host to the Girls 12’s National Hard Courts in August, the L2 GA Junior Open Doubles Championships in December, the ATLA City Finals and ALTA Seniors City Championships, Windward’s engagement in the tennis community rarely lacks.
Cignarelli offers high energy and intensity throughout the facility and engages everyone he comes into contact with. His philosophy regarding tennis is to learn the strategy as a young players along with efficient footwork; with these basics mastered at a young age, players are bound to succeed.
“We believe every student requires a roadmap for success. In our nationally recognized developmental structure, players must display mastery over specific skill sets before advancing to the higher level classes… We believe in providing an arena where every child can maximize his/her potential. From day one, we will treat every player like a professional. With out guidance and their ambition, Windward Lake Club has created a template for building American’s next generation of tennis royalty.”
For adults, 12 ATLA teams and 12 USTA teams compete with Windward as their home courts. Team clinics and drills, ladies and men’s clinics, private and group lessons are available on-site. With a 1:4 ratio during all drills, players can engage with their coaches to ensure a positive and meaningful experience every time they step foot onto the court. Paddle Courts and 36′ courts complete the Windward venue, offering a satisfying experience for everyone.
