South Fulton Tennis Center // Providing an Advantage to Every Athlete
Providing tennis to the local community simply is a way of life at South Fulton Tennis Center, and anyone who walks through their door earns a chance to play, no matter their circumstance.
At South Fulton Tennis Center, the staff encourages players to not only get involved in the game, but to also stay involved in the community. With 24 courts, 20 hard (four 36′ courts) and four clay courts and four full time teaching professionals, the center features ample space and opportunity for every visitor. South Fulton is a public facility owned by the city of College Park in Fulton County, just 10 minutes from the Atlanta Airport; the city bids out the facility every three years, yet Tennis Director, Sam Kennedy, knows exactly what it takes to keep this facility churning. By bringing tennis back to the Southside, this center features a full-service pro shop and stadium court which hosts numerous tournaments and leagues throughout each year.
South Fulton focuses on being about family and the community, along with extending back out into the community. Kennedy seeks to make this the center. By going into the schools and surrounding areas of the city, everything revolves around the tennis venue. Programs such as Volley against Violence, where kids can play with local police forces beginning in September, encompass the true depths of potential this facility possesses. The police teach the children how to play tennis while engaging and mentoring them; kids can come together in a non-threatening environment and enjoy their surroundings. Other weekly activities include working in the community garden behind the courts, where Kennedy teaches the children how to work, even while they play. The kids work in the garden to grow the food and then distribute the vegetables to senior citizens in the area; truly remarkable and rewarding!
Junior tennis programs back up the community involvement opportunities as well, with the Tennis Academy of South Fulton running throughout the week:
- Level 1: 2-3 drills per week for juniors playing Level 4-5 tournaments through state ranked players
- Level 2: 2-3 drills per week for juniors state ranked through sectionally ranked
- Level 3: 3-4 drills per week for juniors sectionally ranked through nationally ranked; optional 5 day training/ week for homeschooled players (the Howard Educational Consulting Group, LLC. is an option for these players, along with available scholarships)
Drills run $30/hour, and students may sign up for 2-4 drills per week (2 hours) & fees based on 8-9 week sessions. An annual programming fee of $250 is refundable for the first 30 days of Academy membership, and it offers competitive match play options on weekends, complimentary coaching at two Atlanta tournaments, parent training seminars on tournaments and junior development, and college selection service.
Youth programs run for Red Ball (5-8 years old,) for Orange Ball (9-10 years old,) and for Green Ball (11-14 years old.) Each program, whether for beginners or more intermediate, focus on the applicable skills and basics necessary to continue advancing and improving in the program. There are four weeks per each session, and sessions are monthly, year-round. The sessions are two days/week plus Saturdays. Classes are from 6-8pm Monday-Friday, and 10am-12pm Saturdays.

Kennedy works with Atlanta Youth Tennis and Education Foundation (AYTEF,) a National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL) program in Atlanta, which is part of USTA’s efforts. South Fulton is one of 10 Excellence Program teams, which is based on a combination of grace and grit. “The Excellence Program is offered through a combination of USTA grants and NJTL funding and brings the most promising young players from its nine top-performing programs together for additional training and mentoring,” and more information can be found HERE from the USTA Foundation. Kennedy also partner with outreach projects with the Boys and Girls Club and does outreach projects with six local schools.
Also, on Saturdays, Kennedy offers FREE play days for juniors and adults with all the balls of all color options out for play; “It’s like a carnival!” Kennedy said. He just wants everyone to be able to experience tennis. His philosophy is to take kids an teach them properly from the beginning and truly learn tennis the correct way.
