Rockbridge Club // Hidden Gem in Gamecock Country
Columbia, SC, known for its scorching summers and the University of South Carolina, also provides a classic tennis club right around the corner at Rockbridge Club.
Situated on a beautiful hillside in Columbia, Rockbridge Club offers exactly what members are searching for. Known for its social atmosphere and consistently busy schedule, you will always find a clinic, tournament, mixer or match at this facility. With 10 total lighted courts, featuring five clay and five hard courts, adults, juniors and everyone in between look no further than to Rockbridge for their next tennis endeavor.
Both head tennis instructors, Ross Sons and Carlos Lozano, offer private and semi-private lessons, group clinics, monthly socials and more. Members can enjoy events such as Breakfast at Wimbledon, where players wear all white, bring a breakfast dish and watch the Finals at the Club. Seasonal events include Thanksgiving tennis mixers, Holiday- themed throw downs and mixers for the start of each league season. Members can bring guests to play and enjoy the indoor and outdoor lounging/seating, a stocked pro-shop with snacks, drinks, stringing services, grips and accessories, and an available grill.
Rockbridge hosts several junior tournaments as well, including the South Carolina L3 Rockbridge Junior Classic, August 19, 2016, the Topspin L2, the Rockbridge Adult Classic in November, and the Rockbridge Southern L3 in March. For non-USTA members, Rockbridge hosts an inter-Club Tournament in August called the autoPROS Columbia Cup Interclub at Rockbridge Club. Check out the full list of tournaments HERE.
Rockbridge also allows non-members to join teams formed at the facility for a certain, yearly rate, although they cannot play on teams for consecutive seasons. League play truly encompasses a large part of the club, and the courts are typically full everyday. Check out available leagues and registrations HERE. Whether four women request a clinic to prepare for their upcoming USTA season, or men decide to take a break from the corporate world and compete on clay, Rockbridge social scene never lacks.
Ross Sons discussed how the members and their enthusiasm truly make Rockbridge one-of-a-kind. For example, a 20-plus year tradition of Wednesday night men’s matches could never be duplicated. The men form quads and tally total games won to move up or down the courts, depending on their results. The competition can be fierce on Wednesdays! All events for members can be found HERE.
Summer camps from June-August run primarily for juniors, and afternoon clinics for both members and non-members begins early fall. By incorporating everything for 10U groups to beginner adult clinics to tournament-level junior clinics, Rockbridge can offer an activity for just about everyone.
Along with the premier tennis courts, Rockbridge Club offers a state-of-the-art outdoor pool and a club house, which can be rented by members or non-members for any occasion, such as wedding receptions, parties, and reunions.
Right around the corner from the highway, this centrally-located Columbia club can also provide restaurants for any taste within a few minutes drive. The recently established minor league baseball team, the Columbia Fireflies, and the USC Gamecocks athletics also drive members and guests to their games. Rock bridge friends and family not only come together for tennis, but they all live within about a 10-mile radius and enjoy every-day life with one another on a regular basis.
Simply put, Rockbridge can become your home away from home and can turn doubles partners or opponents into lifelong friends. Be sure to check out Rockbridge during your time in Columbia and let us know about your experience!
