Cape May Tennis Club // New Jersey’s Best Kept Tennis Secret With Abundant Historical Ties
Cape May Tennis Club’s dedication to its history and ties to remaining a classic tennis club earns annual attraction from visitors.
The vibe at Cape May Tennis Club/ William J. Moore Tennis Center remains that of a classic tennis club, with plaques and information lining the center to remind visitors of the rich background that should not be overlooked. Situated in Cape May, New Jersey at the point of the Atlantic, the Club’s natural layout of 16 courts enthralls annual guests.
Cape May Tennis Club has deep roots in the history book, as it was founded in 1962 and has since kept the traditions that were implemented. Mr. William J. Moore, known as “William,” assisted with the building of the courts; he was later recognized for his service in the tennis community by the USTA and other prestigious organizations. The courts were arranged in pairs and surrounded by tall, private hedges, which allowed for less wind and glare from the ocean. The center expanded in 1983-1985, and a new pro-shop with plaque dedication to its original founders was displayed. To this day, the Cape May Tennis Club is a non-profit corporation and allows guests to enjoy authentic tennis year-round.
Cy Cummings, Club Manager and a member of the club, says the room that’s used to house all the trophies and awards at the club now was an old pottery house. He also acknowledges that the club has produced some college players and a couple players that went on to play higher-level satellite tournaments.
This year’s tournaments include the 1st Random Mixed Doubles Fundraiser (June 17-19), John Davison Men’s 50+ Open Doubles (June 24-26), Laura White Ladies Open Doubles (July 15-17), Lilas Lord Men’s Open Singles (July 22-Aug 2), Ladies Singles (Aug 5-7), Thomas Harris Men’s Open Doubles (Aug 12-14), and the William Moore Mixed Doubles (Aug 19-21.) There must be 8 players of 6 teams for the events.
Other events that take place are a High School Boys Round Robin Tournament in April, seasonal mixers including a June Mixer, a July 4th play day, a William J. Moore Birthday Party Social on Aug 8, an August Summer Social, a High School Girls Round Robin Tournament in September, a Fall tournament social, and then on Sept 30, seasonal play ends and keys are distributed to Annual Players.

But it also has a reputation as a lively tennis center with the best soft courts in South Jersey thanks to William J. Moore.” – Molly Tully, William J. Moore: Portrait of a Teacher.
